わたしの正装

暑い毎日がつづいています。でも、首都圏に住んでいたころよりはずっといいです。のんびりしたこの町は、暑さものんびりしています。しがないみやげ屋のバイトもつづいています。わたしの夏の正装は、パキっと白いTシャツに黒のワイドパンツです。その組み合わせでバイトにも行っていました。そんなある日、そのみやげ屋を営む叔母のたまわく「Tシャツは部屋着だから着てくるな」。ナゾ。どこの世界に住むヒトなのだろう。もともと確執がある叔母にナゾをぶつけるのもめんどうなので、ポロシャツを着てバイトに通っています。休みの日、わたしの正装は庭仕事のフル装備です。とくに夏は虫よけカバーをかぶって、首には保冷剤、腰には蚊取り線香が必須です。暑くても、この格好になるとやる気が出てくるし、このわたしを自分らしいと言うことができる。それがわたしにとっての正装。そして、Tシャツは部屋着ではない。

The hot days continue. But it is far better than when I lived in the country's metropolitan area. This quiet town is gentle with its heat, too. I continue to work part-time at an old souvenir shop. My standard summer work outfit consists of a clean white T-shirt and black trousers. I used to wear that combination to work. Then, one day, my aunt—the shop's owner—told me, "T-shirts are for lounging at home, so don't wear them to work." It’s a mystery. What world does she live in? I don't want to bother asking my aunt—with whom I already have a strained relationship—about this mystery, so I wear a polo shirt to work instead. On my days off, my "formal" set is my full gardening gear. Especially in summer, I have to wear insect-repellent netting, a cooling pack around my neck, and mosquito coils at my waist. Even though it’s hot, I feel motivated when I put on this outfit; it feels like *me*. That is my formal wear. And T-shirts aren't just for lounging at home.
