やる気で歳をとる

冬生まれの姉が、還暦を迎えました。これまで家族と距離をとっていたわたしが、この日のように誕生日をいっしょに祝うのは、およそ40年ぶりです。生家の近くにあるおいしい店でケーキを予約したことを母に告げると、とても喜んでいました。姉といっしょにバイトから帰ったその夜、母は正月のようなごちそうを作って待っていてくれました。ケーキのろうそくを消した姉は「自分が還暦になっても、母さんがこんなに元気でおいしいごはんを作ってくれるなんて、すごくしあわせなこと。」と言いました。そしてケーキを食べながら母は「あなたの還暦の誕生日にも、ごちそうを作るからね。」とわたしに言いました。ココにもどってきたわたしになにができるのだろうとずっと考えていたけれど、それはとてもシンプルなことなのだと思う。どんどん歳をとってやるぞと思う。

Mi hermana mayor, nacida en invierno, celebró su 60 cumpleaños. Siempre había mantenido las distancias con mi familia, así que esta era la primera vez que celebrábamos un cumpleaños juntas en unos 40 años. Cuando le dije a mi madre que había reservado un pastel en una deliciosa pastelería cerca de donde crecí, se alegró. Esa noche, cuando mi hermana y yo volvimos del trabajo, mi madre nos esperó preparando una cena como Año Nuevo. Después de soplar las velas del pastel, mi hermana dijo: «Estoy tan feliz de que, aunque tenga 60 años, mamá siga teniendo tanta energía y cocine tan bien». Entonces, mientras comíamos el pastel, mi madre me dijo: «Yo también te prepararé una cena para tu 60 cumpleaños». Siempre me había preguntado qué podría hacer ahora que estaba de vuelta aquí, y me di cuenta de que era algo muy sencillo. Quiero seguir envejeciendo para mamá.

My older sister, who was born in winter, celebrated her 60th birthday. I'd always kept my distance from my family, so this was the first time we'd celebrated a birthday together in about 40 years. When I told my mother I'd ordered a cake to a lovely bakery near where I grew up, she was delighted. That evening, when my sister and I got home from work, my mother was waiting for us, preparing the dinner like New Year's Eve dinner. After blowing out the candles on the cake, my sister said, "I'm so happy that even though I'm 60, Mom still has so much energy and cooks so well." Then, as we ate the cake, my mother said to me, "I'll cook you a dinner for your 60th birthday, too." I'd always wondered what I could do now that I was back here, and I realized it was something very simple. I want to keep growing older for Mom.
