ぜんぜんかわいくないけれど

雨が降っていなければ、バイトが休みの日は庭に2時間か3時間くらいいます。家守として暮らす祖父母が暮らした家には、とても広い庭があります。日本らしい木がたくさん植わっている庭には、わたしが子どものころは池もあって、その池の橋をわたるのが楽しみでした。池は管理がむずかしいので、いまは埋めてしまって白い石を敷いています。あいさつする、分け入る、切る、刈る、掘る、登る、集める、掃く、巡回する、そして休憩する。バイトが休みの日、庭ですごす時間にすることです。庭いじり、なんてカワイイものではありません。ツナギを着て頭にはてぬぐいを巻いて足元は長靴長靴、腰に道具をぶらさげて、2種類の脚立を準備して。前回の休みの日には樫の木に登り、今日は松の木に登りました。掃除のあとは、さいごに悪さをしそうな草や木を刈るために巡回したあと、休憩して終わります。わたしは守るものを持っていません。でもこの庭と家を家守として守る毎日は、わたしにとても合っていると感じています。わたしに自由を与えてくれる家と庭。

Si en mis días libres no llueve, paso de dos a tres horas en el jardín. La casa que mis abuelos vivían, y donde vivo ahora para cuidarla , tiene un jardín enorme. Está lleno de árboles típicos japoneses, y de niño disfrutaba cruzando el puente. El estanque es difícil de mantener, así que ahora lo han rellenado y lo han reemplazado por una piedra blanca. Saludos, aventurandose, cortando, segando, cavando, trepando, recolectando, barriendo, patrullando y descansando. Estas son las horas que paso en el jardín en mis días libres. No tengo nada que proteger, pero siento que la vida diaria de cuidar este jardín y esta casa me sienta muy bien. Una casa y un jardín que me dan libertad.

I dress in overalls, a some towel around my head, rubber boots, tools hanging from my waist, and two types of stepladders. On my last day off, I climbed an oak tree, and today I climbed a pine. After cleaning up, I do one last patrol to trim any grass or trees that might be causing problems, and then I take a break. I have nothing to protect, but I feel that the daily life of taking care of this garden and this house suits me very well. A house and a garden that give me freedom.
