自由ってなんだろう。しがないみやげ屋のバイトからの帰り道、そんなことを毎日考えています。休日の日数と自由の度合いを、天秤にかけてはいけないなと思っています。そんなグレイな毎日に、確かな自由を与えてくれるのは庭仕事の時間です。明るい時間が長くなってきたので、バイトに出かける前や帰宅したあとの短い時間でも、長靴をはいて庭に分け入ります。今月に入ってからは、帽子をかぶった上に、ハチよけのネットをかぶっています。喜びをくれた枝垂れのウメの木は、モリモリの葉の中にいくつか実を見つけることができます。老いたサクラの木も数少ない花を咲かせてくれたあと、葉っぱをつけてくれています。そして、いまツツジが満開です。悪さをしそうな蔓系の植物や竹もふくめて、たくさんの驚きや楽しさを与えてくれます。だから楽しくて、週に1日しかないバイト休みの日には、3時間くらいは庭仕事をしています。わたしがこの家で暮らしはじめるよりもずっと前から、この庭の見回りをきっとしてきたであろう地域ネコが数匹います。下草が伸びたがるこの季節、低い姿勢で庭を見回ることが多くなりました。ネコの視線に近い目でこの庭を回ると、その楽しさに気づきます。この庭で、ネコのようにいつでも自由になることができる。だからだいじょうぶ。わたしは自由。
